Vila Franca do Campo is situated about 50 minutes drive from Ponta Delgada. If you survive the journey (you’d better have a strong stomach when taking local buses over here) along the winding roads. But the scenery is stunning: colourful quaint houses, green hills with cows grazing around and many joyful birds. And the ocean of course!

We were not the only ones who came to admire the ocean.

The climate in this region is mild and humid, with temperatures oscillating between 14 °C (57 °F) and 22 °C (72 °F), and with regular precipitation, responsible for the fertile soils.

This is Hermitage of Nossa Senhora da Paz. What a place! It’s just a pity that you cannot go in.

In 1967, they constructed a staircase to represent Pais Nossos dos Mistérios Gozosos e Dolorosos (Our Father and Joyful/Sorrowful Mysteries) prayer, separated into ten flights to symbolize the Ave Maria prayer.
