It was a nice, warm, sunny day so we decided to head off to Ribeira Grande which is situated about 20km northeast of Ponta Delgada. Although the Azoreans love cars (you would sometimes think that there are more cars than people) you CAN actually get to most places on the island by public transport. And it’s cheap!

Ribeira Grande is a charming town with many colourful streets and some fine examples of urban architecture from the 17^th and 18^th centuries.

While watching ocean waves crashing against Santa Barbara beach, we saw this magnificent rainbow.

Santa Barbara is one of the best surfing spots in Portugal.
