This is Ponta Delgada on the island of São Miguel and we are in February. There are swimmers, sunbathers, people in T-shirts and shorts… You would think that you are on the wrong page of the calendar.

These men were having fun windsurfing. We sat down by the port and observed them for a while.

And when they got tired, they sat on their boards and had quite a long chat in the middle of the sea.

Further up on the main road, people were throwing buckets of water at each other and there were some fancy dress costumes.

The main road was packed with people. The town was gearing up for the carnival…
