The Monastery of Batalha
I like Nazaré for many reasons but I also like it because from here you can go to many other places. There are some interesting towns around, there is nature…. and there are old stones. Now, that’s my cup of tea because I like rummaging through the past. So, let me tell you about the Monastery of Batalha in the district of Leiria.
I eavesdropped on one of the guides and he said that it took over a century to build, spanning the reign of seven kings.
This is the Tomb of John I and Philippa.
As you can notice, we were not the only ones visiting the monastery…
This was my favorite part – the Royal Cloister. If I were a monk, this is where I would spend most of my time.
And if I was a bird, this is where I’d come to refresh myself.
There were actually three cloisters.
And this is the unfinished chapel. I stood in the middle of the chapel and I gazed in awe at the most impressive architecture. It may look small and significant in the photos but I can tell you that it is absolutely stunning. I felt so tiny and insignificant. Ah, some impressions cannot be transformed into adjectives…
A magical place! Wonderful acoustics and one of the finest examples of our late Gothic.
all best

Thanks Luis. Perhaps I should go there for a concert…

Yes, of course. I think they don’t have a season, but they do promote some concerts from time to time. A great excuse to visit again 🙂

Thanks for letting me know. I’ll check that out (and will let you know). I see that you’re from Flores. That’s where we want to go next year 😉
